The Adventures of Shola, Marsh Award finalist
2015-02-03 ¦ Prizes
The Marsh Award jury has released this year's list of finalists. Among the shortlisted works is The Adventures of Shola (Pushkin, 2013), a book that recounts the adventures of Shola the dog.
The Marsh Award highlights the best translations in children's literature published in the United Kingdom.
The Adventures of Shola, translated from the Spanish Las aventuras de Xola, was published in English last year by Pushkin. The translator was Margaret Jull Costa, who has translated the majority of Bernardo Atxaga's work into English.
The jury has released the names of the six finalists, and the winner will be announced in January. The Adventures of Shola has received praise from various quarters since its publication in the United Kingdom, including being shortlisted as one of the best works of 2013 by The Independent.
The Adventures of Shola is a collection of stories that were first published in Basque (and later in Spanish) as four separate books: Xolak badu lehoien berri (1995, Erein), Xola eta basurdeak (1996, Erein), Xola ehizan (2000, Gara), and Xola eta Angelito (2004, Erein).
