British publisher Bloomsbury has just released the book "Novel Writing: A Writers' and Artists' Companion", a guide for writers in which several established novelists —including Bernardo Atxaga— share their experience with the process of creating a novel.
Written by best-selling authors Romesh Gunesekera and A.L. Kennedy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing, the book is a comprehensive guide for both aspiring and established novelists. In it several writers share their experiences and give practical advice about the process of writing a novel.
The first part of the book provides an introduction to the forms and history of the novel and gives advice about planning and researching a novel, developing characters and powerful narratives, and other elements of a novel.
The second part is more wide-ranging and interesting in that it offers tips from well-known novelists like Bernardo Atxaga, Philip Pullman, Louise Doughty, Glenn Patterson, Jeanette Winterson, Jonathan Franzen, Doris Lessing, Elif Shafak, Andrea Levy, Alan Hollinghurst, Michèle Roberts, Joan Brady and Lynn Freed, among many others.
The third part offers practical advice on collaboration, overcoming writer's block, rewriting and editing, and finding an agent and a publisher.
