From March 29th through June 9th, writer Bernardo Atxaga (winner of the Eusko Ikaskuntza-Caja Laboral de Humanidades, Cultura, Artes y Ciencias Sociales prize in 2002) is teaching an undergraduate course as well as a graduate course at Stanford University in the United States as part of the Eusko Ikaskuntza Visiting Professor of Basque Culture program.

Atxaga’s postgraduate course will explore the cultural and political transformation of the Basque Country in the mid-1970s through four seminal figures: Jorge Oteiza, Luis Mitxelena, Gabriel Aresti, and Mikel Laboa as member of the music group Ez dok amairu.

The undergraduate course will deal with the reawakening of the Basque language, which seemed on the verge of extinction but has seen a tremendous resurgence since the 1960s.

This is the first Eusko Ikaskuntza Visiting Professor of Basque Culture appointment at Stanford, fruit of an agreement between the Basque Studies Society (Eusko Ikaskuntza) and the prestigious Standford university.
