The literary festival Gutun Zuria, recently held in Bilbao (and which we covered previously in Spanish), provided Words without Borders the chance to interview Bernardo Atxaga. The interview The Quality of the Fabric was conducted by Cristina Slattery and is now available online.

Atxaga spoke about his childhood in Asteasu and Andoain and his beginnings in literature.

Among the topics discussed, Atxaga reveals some of his favorite books: The Waste Books by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, The Wild Boy of Aveyron by Jean Itard, First Love by Samuel Beckett, Confessions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and The Story of Art by E.H. Gombrich.
