Atxaga spent several days in Mexico and appeared at numerous events. On December 1 the Basque author presented his novel Nevadako Egunak (Nevada Days) at the International Book Fair in Guadalajara, accompanied by the renowned Mexican writer Alberto Ruy Sánchez. Atxaga was warmly welcomed at the book fair, spending two days signing books and attending media events.
On December 3, which was World Euskara Day, he spoke in one of the international temples of literature, the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Atxaga and journalist Javier Aranda spoke about their work and the present state of literature written in Basque in the Adamo Boari room at the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Atxaga talked about how he constructs his literary worlds, which are made up of fragments or pieces of memory that appear at random. His challenge is to “take an incoherent mass and transform it into a brilliant snapshot that ultimately illuminates the entire book“.
“Literature brings out the infinite universe of the human soul and makes readers feel freer and less alone“, the writer said.
