After being published in the UK in 2011 by Harvill Secker, Seven Houses in France was published in the US in September of this year.

The novel was translated into English by Margaret Jull Costa (the usual translator of the Basque writer’s works into English) and published by Graywolf Press. This is the sixth book by Atxaga to be translated into English (the others are Obabakoak, The Lone Man, The Lone Woman, Two Brothers and The Accordionist's Son).

This latest novel has been positively reviewed by the American press in the days since its publication. Publisher's Weekly included it in its list of recommended reading for September, calling it "a masterpiece... impossible to put down", and The Daily Beast included it in its Hot Reads list.

The novel has also been mentioned or reviewed in various American magazines and web sites, such as Friday Reads and Mary Whipple's blog, where she notes that "Atxaga's sense of narrative flow reflects his experience with the much longer novels he has written in Basque, and the novel moves quickly, enhanced by intriguing and vibrant details about the time, place, and main characters".

In the past few days the number of mentions and reviews has increased in specialized magazines and web sites such as the literary magazine Bookforum, Counterpunch magazine, the web site Three Percent, Startribune, the Library Journal, and the blog His Futile Preoccupation.

The American adventure of Lalande Biran, Chrysostome Liege and the rest of the characters from Atxaga’s novel is off to a very good start.
